This Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following standard guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.
We send the full course out, you then read through the course in your own time and complete the assignments which you send to your tutor for marking. There is no word count for these assignments. However, one sentence answers will be rejected and you will have to re-submit it for marking.
Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by ABC Awards, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.
We recommend you spend approximately 360 hours of your time studying for the Higher Level Teaching Assistant course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 7 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 14 hours a week you could complete it in six months.

How is the course structured?
The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma (HLTA) course study modules are linked to the professional standards for HLTA status which set out for teachers, employers and parents the contribution to pupils’ learning that HLTAs can be expected to make.
The standards cover three areas:
Professional attributes (standards 1-7)
These set out the attitudes, values and commitment expected of HLTAs.
Professional knowledge and understanding (standards 8-16)
These set out the knowledge and skills needed by HLTAs to be able to work effectively with teachers as part of the professional team supporting learning.
Professional skills (standards 17-33)
These set out the expectations for planning, monitoring, managing and evaluating learning within the framework of guidance and supervision agreed with the assigned teacher and in accordance with arrangements made by the headteacher of the school.
Qualification: Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant Certificate of Achievement
At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).
The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme. This means that it has undergone an external quality check to ensure that it meets certain quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 4 against level descriptors published by Ofqual for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
The course itself has been designed by the NCC to meet specific learners’ or employers’ requirements. ABC Awards’ endorsement involves a robust and rigorous quality audit by external inspectors to ensure quality is consistently met. A regular review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.
In Scotland this course leads to a Level 6 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 6 on the The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) for Scotland.
In Ireland this course leads to a Level 5 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications for Ireland (NFQI) for Ireland.

As a teaching assistant you would support teachers with their everyday work in the classroom, so that they can concentrate on teaching. You could have another job title such as classroom assistant or learning support assistant. Your exact duties would vary depending on the school and the age of the children, but would typically include: getting the classroom ready for lessons listening to children read, reading to them, or telling them stories helping children who need extra support to complete tasks helping teachers to plan learning activities and complete records supervising group activities looking after children who are upset or have had accidents encouraging younger children to learn through play helping with outings and sports events carrying out routine administrative tasks. You would also support children with particular individual needs, working one-to-one or in small groups. With experience, you could lead some classes. In some schools you could have a specialism, such as literacy, numeracy, Special Educational Needs or music. Bilingual teaching assistants are often employed in schools with a lot of children whose first language is not English. As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) you would have more responsibility, which could include: working alongside teachers to support learning activities helping to plan lessons and prepare teaching materials acting as a specialist assistant for particular subjects leading classes under the direction of the teacher supervising other support staff. You would also assess, record and report on the progress of children you work with.

Q. How does distance learning work?
To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into sections. You work through each section at your own pace and time. Once completed, send the test paper back to your personal tutor for marking. You will then move onto the next section once successfully completing the previous section. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.
Q. When can I start the course?
The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t require any previous experience or qualifications. Q. How long do the courses take?
This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in your course literature. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.
Q. Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, You will be allocated an experienced tutor who will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have. Your tutors can be contacted via email and post.
Q. If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
Q. How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help 7 days a week by email, or post from your dedicated tutor, you just email your assignments for marking. You have to send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you the feedback.
Q. Will I get a qualification at the end?
Yes, for all our courses, you will receive a diploma or a recognised qualification from the awarding body of your course.
Q. Is the course work done online or sent via the internet?
No, the course work can be done offline using your PC or for paper based courses working through your course folder.
Q. Is there a time limit or any deadlines?
We do like you to complete the course within the tutor support period but we can extend this for a small charge (currently £40 for 12 months). If you follow the recommended study hours, this will give you a good guide to complete the course withim the specified time period.
Q. Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our paper based courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Q. How quickly will I receive my course material?
Once your payment has been received and cleared your enrolment should be processed within two days and your course materials delivered within 5 days, for customers who choose to pay in instalments this can take longer as we need a signed agreement back from you before we send the course materials.
Q. Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
